THE WRITERLY KITCHEN

About

A Place Where Play Is Taken Seriously.

The Writerly Kitchen is a theatre workshop platform founded by Filip Holacky, a Czech composer & writer based in Edinburgh, producing original work across film, theatre, and audio. We develop new writing through readings, workshops, and public performances. We treat new musical theatre with the craft, ambition, and rigour it deserves. This is a place where play is taken seriously.

Short Film

Alice Alive

A surreal, almost-one-woman musical short film. Drawing on the visual language of early and experimental cinema, ALICE ALIVE exists somewhere between silent film, music theatre, and waking dream. Continuing the tradition of Brecht and Weill, it is a formally daring work that treats the camera as a stage and the stage as a hallucination.

Dawn Resurgent

In a near-future world after the Great Unmooring, institutional collapse that left entire countries ungoverned, a cartographer Dawn is sent into a shifting autonomous zone, tasked with recording a landscape that will not hold still. What she doesn't expect to find there is her long-lost son.

The Descent of the Escalator Saints

Five members of an elevator phobia support group descend through the sub-levels of a shopping mall, searching for a missing member who was swallowed by an escalator. THE DESCENT OF THE ESCALATOR SAINTS is an absurdist tragicomedy in dialogue with Beckett and Havel, using the mall as purgatorial architecture where connection is perpetually promised as well as perpetually withheld.

Podcast Musical

Puffy Coats

It's 3am at a major international airport and the last flights have gone. Two strangers notice an abandoned set of matching tote bags at exactly the same moment. They probably should tell someone ... but they don't. When they find blood on the mirror of an out-of-order bathroom, mild curiosity becomes something far more urgent. Puffy Coats is a two-hander podcast musical thriller in three parts; camp, creepy, and using audio as a weapon.
